| This is a 3-minute fight at the Gracie Invitational European Championships. This is a sport jiu jitsu tournament, so there's no striking, and 'being submitted' is signalled by tapping your hand. On the street, this would usually mean someone verbally giving up, being choked, or having a joint broken.
| | It is a good example of two key elements of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Firstly, relax, even when in a bad position, for example under side mount. And secondly, that a fight can be won from underneath. Both of these are displayed in this video of the James’ fight.
| |
Early in the video, you will see James shooting for a take down and a Triangle Choke, both of which were countered by his opponent.
| |
Having tried for the submission, James’ opponent manages to take Side Mount. Having got the points for the position he then tries to stall the fight by just holding on. James knows better than to waste energy by fighting his way out, so just relaxes.
| |
As he starts to move James takes the opportunity to pull guard.
| |
Once with guard, James tries for a Collar Choke, as his opponent moves to defend, James switches quickly to the Arm Bar and finishes the fight.
| | The end of the fight is indicated, by James’ opponent tapping James’ thigh.
