Real Frequently Asked Questions

So here are our top Real Frequently Asked Questions...

Will I get hurt?

It's unlikely. Gary & James have never had a bad injury in their years as students, instructors and in tournaments. This is because of the 'tap' system which allows you do as you would on the street, but allowing your partner to signal that you've got the it right without being hurt.

Can I get fit doing Gracie Jiu Jitsu?

Yes. It burns loads of kilojoules, and works all the muscle groups.

What's the difference between Japanese Ju Jitsu and Gracie/Brazilian Ju Jitsu?

Japanese Ju Jitsu was the original samurai art, and karate, judo and aikido were all developed from it. Gracie Jiu Jitsu focuses on leverage & the practical techniques that were tried & tested in Rio, and is a lot less formal.

How long is a class?

Most classes are an hour long - there's time to change, train and shower without taking too much of your evening.

What do you mean by submission?

In Gracie Jiu Jitsu, the moves you practice are the same as the ones you'd use on the street - but to ensure that no-one's hurt, we signal submission by 'tapping' the opponent. So a submission is a 'win' without the broken bones!

How do I progress through the belts?

There are only 3 belts for kids (white, green, yellow), 5 belts for adults – white, blue, purple, brown and black, and four ‘tabs’ between each belt. The belts are well respected and earnt – you’ll get tabs on your white belt as you move through the combatives program, and then you qualify to grade for your blue belt.
